RS422-compatible differential drive output signals offer several advantages over traditional step and direction signals for controlling motion systems for stepper and AC servo motors. The RS422 differential signaling is superior for applications requiring long-distance communication, high-speed control, or operation in electrically noisy environments, while regular step and direction signals may suffice for simpler, shorter-range setups. Certain AC servo drives (like Panasonic) prefer RS422 over other step and direction type outputs and the RS422 expansion board is recommended for all AC servo motor CNC retrofits in scenarios where reliability, noise immunity, and long-distance communication are critical.
